The Maps Without Roads project

In November 2004 'pollengroup' created (as the Maps without Roads project) a series of works for the Elia 8th Biennial Conference: 'Challenging the frame'.

Networking was the keyword for the series of artworks. We were interested in the relationships between people that meet at conferencess, utilising games and processes that depend on the attendees recognising themselves and acquaintances as small part of a large group. We were especially interested in how these connections are created at conferences as big the Luzern conference where an individual can be lost in the crowds.

We used photographs of the participants in a 'Guess Who' game. Ten of these games were placed in the coffee space of the conference so all the participants could familiarise themselves with eachother.

The same pictures were used for a projection. By projecting two random participants together it gave the illusion that the two were connected.
